The bicycle towing mileage is the same as vehicle towing mileage: 3 miles for Basic members, 100 miles for Plus/Premier and one 200-mile tow for a Premier household. Most of New England and the Mid-Atlantic, as well as Colorado, is now covered, but check on your policy before heading out on a ride without your flat-patching kit. The American Automobile Association (AAA) made an exciting announcement in the MidAtlantic this year to celebrate National Bike Month: It’s offering bicycle roadside assistance to members. So some level of mechanical skill is required, unless you just want a ride home. Note: Service providers do not deliver new equipment, but will dispatch a service provider with commonly available tools upon request. With a plan, you get two service calls per year for $39.95 ($17 for additional cyclists on your policy). Bonus: BWC advocates for the continued expansion of bike lanes and biking. Not only the company an eco-minded auto club, it also offers 24/7 nationwide roadside assistance service for bicycles. Your best bike assist option is probably the Better World Club. The services vary state to state, so know what’s available around you, and if you take a bike vacation, make sure the service is available in that state before you start calling for a ride home. Luckily, now there are a few different roadside assistance options ready and willing to come to your aid. But some days, the flats outnumber the spare tubes and patches, and suddenly, you’re stranded. Every rider should know how to repair a flat tire, and should be carrying a well-stocked gear bag on every ride.
